This page concentrates on Town Gate which was the historic centre of Guiseley.
On the image to the left I have had a go at colouring in buildings which are still standing in green and those which have since been demolished in red.
As you can see many of the old buildings have been lost; most notably the entire area to the north of the cross has been cleared to make way for the Frank Parkinson homes and the war memorial.
Union Street looks to have been demolished to make way for Queensway which was added in the 1960s.
Many old builings do survive though which make for a great reference for lining up many of the old images.
This later image is from 1961 (view at NLS) and shows Town Gate in a state between the Victorian map above and present day. The Frank Parkinson homes are in place but Cross Inn and adjacent houses still stand for example.
We can also see some of the names of the little streets which were lost such as Hillcroft Place and East View Terrace.
There was more than one smithy (blacksmiths) in Guiseley but these images are of the one at Town Gate. It can be clearly seen in some of the other photos from further back.
